6/10/2023 0 Comments No longer human book review![]() ![]() Yozo hides his true self by masking himself as a clown and views humans as a completely different species that he cannot relate to. Since his childhood, Yozo has always felt an intense detachment from humans he is unable to understand or connect with the rest of humanity and is incapable of expressing his emotions. ![]() ![]() Set in the 1930s in Japan, the novel chronicles the sorrow, alienation and destruction of Oba Yozo through three notebooks, in a first person perspective that allows readers to enter the dark mind of Yozo. Although it may seem utterly daunting and dark, it’s worth the read as it is beautifully written and leaves an indelible impression. The 1948 Japanese classic is the second best selling book in Japan, and more importantly, holds the prestigious title as my favorite book. From the introduction to the last word of the 176 page book, the main character Yozo’s life seems to have begun its decay the moment he was born as each page reveals the tragedies of his life. Osamu Dazai’s second and last novel “No Longer Human” is a remarkable, poignant and thought-provoking story that leaves readers pondering the complexities of humanity. They are both Western renegades surviving in the jungle and exerting control over its indigenous people. It may be tempting to equate the subject matter with Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and Dr Swenson with its central character, Kurtz. As far as defiantly childless women go, Patchett has a wonderful creation in Dr Swenson, a seventy-something adventurer-scientist who hurls clever rejoiners at the world's body-clock alarmists: "I've never believed the women of the world are entitled to leave every one of their options open for a lifetime," she says at one point, and at another: "Perhaps instead of trying to reproduce themselves, these postmenopausal women who want to be mothers could adopt up some of the excess that will surely be available."ĭr Swenson is, like so many of Patchett's female protagonists, a deeply moral rebel, part Indiana Jones and part Marie Curie, delivering crisp, Aristotelian gems to her protégé, Marina ("Never be so focused on what you're looking for that you overlook the thing you actually find"). ![]() ![]() Yes, there are some really out-of-place moments (Kazuya’s one panel fantasy of Mizuhara seems especially designed to reassure the thirstier reader that this still has sex on the brain), but they definitely seem placed more to check a box than for any good reason. Not for nothing, this also swerves largely away from its roots as a harem story in favour of being thoughtful and reflective and focusing on character over gags. However, credit where it’s due - this is an above average instalment and I would even say it’s quite good. ![]() ![]() Look, I would be the first to admit that my regular reviews of Rent-A-Girlfriend tend towards being pretty harsh, or Rant-A-Girlfriend you could say, and to say that I think that the series is uneven is a big understatement. ![]() We see the origins of Mizuhara and her love of acting, plus a more-awkward-than-usual proposal from Kazuya. An aquarium date with Sumi and Kazuya should be a relatively straightforward event, but Kazuya and Sumi both have a lot on their minds. ![]() 6/10/2023 0 Comments A shropshire lad by ae housman![]() ![]() A classically trained scholar and an academic by inclination, Housman (1859-1936) published only two volumes of poems in his lifetime. The hope is faint, the feeling of the poem is darkly forbidding. The poem struggles to affirm that any road that leads away from a familiar place might someday, someway, sometime lead back again. Not specific enough to be a narrative, the spare poem, 16 tightly rhymed, tightly rhythmic lines (it has been set to music a number of times), conjures with lyrical simplicity the inevitable doubts that cloud a departure into the unknown and the emotional pull that draws the person back to stay where they know they cannot stay. The poem explores the peculiar mix of anxiety and expectation that defines leaving any place that has become familiar and comforting without the certainty of ever returning. Housman’s “Poem XXXVI” (Poem 36), part of A Shropshire Lad, a cycle of 63 short poems Housman published at his own expense in 1896, captures at once the thrill and the loneliness, the anticipation and uncertainty of the open road. ![]() ![]() His mother and maternal grandmother were both born in India but spent most of their lives in England.
